Baptists Today names Tony Cartledge as contributing editor

MACON, Ga. - Tony W. Cartledge will become contributing editor of the autonomous, national news journal Baptists Today on August 1. Earlier he announced plans to leave the editorship of the North Carolina Baptist newspaper, Biblical Recorder, this summer to teach Old Testament at Campbell University’s divinity school in Buies Creek, N.C.

In the part-time position with Baptists Today, Cartledge will contribute news, opinion and feature writings to both the monthly print and daily web editions (www.baptiststoday.org). Directors of the news journal approved his appointment during their April 20 meeting in Birmingham, Ala.

“Tony Cartledge has provided first-class reporting and news analysis to thoughtful Baptists for years,” said Jimmy R. Allen, chair of the Baptists Today board of directors. “His joining us will be a major step for increasing the effectiveness of Baptists Today.”

Cartledge, 55, is a graduate of the University of Georgia, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and Duke University where he earned a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near Eastern Studies. In January he announced plans to take early retirement and teach at Campbell.

The North Carolina convention has shifted in a much more conservative direction since Cartledge assumed the editorship in 1998. The editor’s chair at the Recorder “just doesn’t fit as well as it once did,” he said in a January posting at www.biblicalrecorder.org.

While calling teaching a “natural vocational direction,” Cartledge, who serves on the Baptist World Alliance communications committee, wants to keep a hand in journalism. And Baptists Today is the first Baptist journal he wrote for on a regular basis.

“I am delighted by the opportunity to enter a formal relationship with Baptists Today as contributing editor,” said Cartledge, whose Bible study commentaries were carried in the publication for several years while he was a pastor. “I hope my contributions will help to make an excellent journal even better.”

Baptists Today executive editor John Pierce said he is pleased Cartledge with become a part of the news journal’s editorial team.

“Our readers are well acquainted with and appreciative of Tony’s good work from earlier days when his Bible commentaries appeared in Baptists Today to his more recent writings we have carried,” said Pierce. “I look forward to working more directly with him in providing readers with interesting, relevant and unrestricted information that is both reliable and helpful.”

Cartledge will continue to live in Apex, N.C. Baptists Today was founded in 1983 and is headquartered in Macon, Ga.
